As mentioned on our earlier posts, the Wii Fit Balance Board uses data from four different sensors to estimate the weight distribution of the ‘gamer on board’. There are actually two sensors on either side and the complex Japanese electro-magnetics and computation is able to accurately estimate each fine movement made by the person standing on the balance board. This is the unique feature of the Nintendo Wii compared to an Xbox 360 or Sony PlayStation.

Nintendo Wii Fit with Balance Board and its concept were originally announced by the extremely famous game designer Shigeru Miyamoto in 2007, at the famous E3 conference. The Wii Fit was first launched in Japan, in December of 2007. It was the way the Japanese Sumo wrestlers did the weigh-ins that sparked the idea about the Wii Fit. These heavy wrestlers have to use two scales. The electronics of the two scales are integrated so that it can compute the cumulative weight of the sumo wrestler by taking data from the two separate scales. This is the very principle that has been applied in case of the Wii Fit Balance Board. Measuring your weight is not the only thing it does, it is extremely sensitive to all the fine movements gamers make. It does this by determining your center of gravity. It uses information such as height, together with the weight, makes a virtual map of your center of gravity and tracks all your fine (and gross) movements extremely accurately. In addition to the unique wireless Wii remote controller, Nintendo Wii Fit uses another unique platform peripheral, the wireless Wii Fit Balance Board. The Wii Fit with Wii balance board measures a user’s weight and center of gravity and then the Wii Fit software calculates the body mass.

It has a plain white top with a light grey bottom. It requires four AA batteries, which last for about 60 hours. The Wii Fit balance board contains multiple pressure sensors (four) that are used to measure the user’s center of balance and body mass index. Although the Wii Fit with Wii balance board will only display weight readings up to 330lbs, the actual physical structure of the Wii balance board is able to withstand up to 300 kg or 660 pounds.
